Tutoring

Successful students report feeling competent and confident in their skills. Our tutors are committed to helping their students experience success. This is accomplished by developing a caring relationship as well as a thorough understanding of their needs. Creating a safe environment where students become proficient and independent learners is our goal.

SKILLS – BASED TUTORING

Reading and Language Arts

Certified reading specialists and special educators work individually with students having difficulty developing word recognition, reading comprehension, and written expression skills. Using materials appropriate to students’ current levels of functioning, our tutors employ a variety of techniques so students enjoy becoming accomplished, fluent readers and writers.

Foundations of Mathematics

Teachers certified in elementary education, special education, and/or math offer individual instruction to elementary-grade students whose math computation and problem-solving skills have been slow to develop. Instructors are sensitive to the developmental needs of children and have devised strategies to appeal to the characteristics of each learner.

Study and Organizational Skills

Certified educators teach students who already have developed basic academic skills to apply their abilities to the organization of time, materials, and assignments. They also help students determine study strategies that are most appropriate to their learning styles. We base our instruction on the materials assigned to students in their school programs, so tutoring time is used productively. These materials are supplemented by information and techniques with which instructors have had success during their years of experience.

CONTENT-SPECIFIC TUTORING

Older students who have developed foundation skills often have difficulty with specific subject areas when concepts become more complex. Our content-certified educators provide intensive instruction in the areas of English, math, science, and foreign language to improve students’ understanding and proficiency. They help individuals apply the strengths they have developed in subjects they enjoy and with which they have been successful, to those that are more difficult for them.
